Off to see the world: Aloha, Maui!

Après 2 jours de repos à Hawaï sur l'île de Maui en ne faisant pas grand chose à part d'aller à la piscine et à la plage, nous décidons mardi d'aller visiter la ville historique Lahaina, qui était la capitale du royaume d'Hawaï. Il y a un musée intéressant et quelques anciennes maisons restaurées du 19ème siècle où les missionnaires vivaient. La vue sur l'océan pacifique est magnifique et il y a une exposition/magasin sur le photographe Peter Lik qui fait des photos qui se vendent des millions.
En fin d'après midi nous allons au cratère principale de l'île: Haleakala qui signifie "terre au dessus des nuages", et en effet nous devons passer une épaisse couche de nuages avant d'arriver au sommet à 3000 mètres. Le cratère a été créé par l'érosion et non pas par une éruption. Il fait froid et nous devons sortir nos pulls et manteaux (plus de 13 degrés de différence entre la plage et le sommet). De là haut nous pouvons voir la "Big Island-Hawai'i " et nous attendons le jolie couché de soleil sur la baie.

After two days in Hawaii of doing nothing at all except for lazing on the beach/by the pool (I know, it's a hard life), on Tuesday we decided to actually visit some of the island of Maui, where we're staying. We started off by visiting the historic town of Lahaina, which was once the capital of the kingdom of Hawaii. It has quite an interesting museum and some restored buildings from the 19th century where missionaries and officials used to live. The best bit about the town though is that it has beautiful views over the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon we went up to the Haleakala crater (not really a crater because it was created by erosion not an eruption). Haleakala means 'land above the clouds' and that's exactly what it is. On the way up we passed through cloud to the very windy and chilly summit. The views were amazing. Just before sunset the clouds cleared partly so we could see down to the sea below and the sunset was beautiful.
