Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook

Après une grasse mat pour rattraper l'heure de couché, nous allons au Lac Tekapo au milieu de l'île du sud. L'eau du lac est turquoise dû aux particules qu'il y avait sur le glacier qui a formé ces lacs. C'est vraiment jolie lorsqu'il y a du soleil. Après avoir pic-niqué au bord du lac et visité les alentours, nous trouvons un motel pour la nuit (tout est complet!) et nous revenons pour contempler les étoiles car c'est l'un des 5 meilleures lieux pour les voir car il n'y a pas de lumières à moins de 5km autour. Helen peut voir sa première étoile filante et j'en profite pour tester l'appareil photo de nuit.

Le lendemain nous allons au Mt Cook à côté et nous nous arrêtons sur le passage au lac Pukaki avec d'incroyables arcs en ciel - nous avons même pu voir un double arc-en-ciel. Malheureusement les nuages et la pluie sont là et nous ne pouvons pas prendre de jolies photos du Mont. Heureusement que nous l'avons vu la veille de loin. Nous nous promenons à la vallée Tasmane pour voir des icebergs.

After a lazy start to Tuesday, we headed for Lake Tekapo in the middle of the South Island. The water of the lake, and several lakes in the area, is turquoise due to rock particles left suspended in it when the glacier carved the lake. It's really quite beautiful when the sun shines on it. After taking photos and picnicking by the lake we went to find a hotel (harder than it sounds) before heading back to the lake at night to take photos of the stars. Lake Tekapo is in a dark reserve, which limits the amount of electric light and leans that the night sky is quite simply awe-inspiring. I've never seen stars like it - I even saw my first shooting star! 

The following morning we drove to Mount Cook stopping at Lake Pukaki, another turquoise lake, on the way. Unfortunately it was raining and thick cloud was covering the mountain, so we didn't get any good pictures. Luckily we'd seen it in the distance the day before. We did however see a glacier lake with icebergs in it - even the icebergs have a turquoise tint. There were rainbows galore - at one point we saw a double rainbow, and we saw a perfect arc - so it was beautiful in its own way.
