Off to see the world: Centre de Kyushu

Nous changeons nos JR Pass (qui permet de prendre le train de façon illimité durant 14 jours) à Nagasaki et prenons le train pour Kumamoto au centre de Kyushu.
Il y a l'un des plus gros château du Japon et les cerisiers dans le parc le rende magnifique. Puis nous visitons une ancienne maison de samouraï.
Le lendemain nous reprenons le train pour le Mt Aso, volcan encore en activité et nous voyons la fumée sortir du cratère. Malheureusement l'accès au cratère est fermé et nous ne pouvons pas nous en approcher. Le paysage est assez désertique contrairement aux photos des brochures, cela est surement dû à la dernière éruption en 2015. Dans le train qui nous emmène à Beppu (sur la côte Est) une employée nous prend en photo avec une pancarte, ça doit être un train spécial...
Arrivé à Beppu, nous dînons au restaurant Gyoza Kogetsu (3-7 Ekimae-honmachi, Beppu) avec un menu très simple: une assiette excellente de Gyoza (raviolis frits) et bière, 600 Yens (4euros) chacun. Et je profite de la source d'eau chaude (sorte de bain public) de l'hôtel avant de se coucher.
Dimanche direction Yufuin qui est une station thermale avec une multitude d'Onsen (source d'eau chaude) en plein air, le plus vieux est à 200 Y (voir photo) mais je vais finalement dans un privé. Il faut se doucher puis rentrer dans le bain chaud qui se trouve en plein air.
Le soir nous re-goûtons au bœuf japonais (peut-être de Kyushu) mais les sauces à l'ail gâchent la viande...

We changed our JR passes (which mean we can take the train anywhere in Japan for 14 days) at Nagasaki and caught the train to Kumamoto in the middle of Kyushu. The castle in Kumamoto is one of the largest in Japan and with the cherry blossoms it was manificent. After the castle we visited a samurai's townhouse - very zen.

The following day we got back on the train to go to Mt Aso, an active volcano, and we saw smoke comin from the crater. Unfortunately because of very recent activity the crater wasn't open to the public. Contrary to all the photos in the brochures and guides, the landscape was quite barren - we think it must be due to the eruption in September 2015. On the train on the way to Beppu an employee took a photo of us with a sign to prove we'd been on it - it must be a special train...

Once we arrived in Beppu we went to eat at Gyoza Kogetsu which has a very simple menu: a plate of excellent gyoza (fried dumplings) and beer - 600 Y each (about £3.75). We had two plates of gyoza, and Guillaume had beer. Back at the hotel Guillaume went to the hotel's hot spring/public bath (onsen) before going to bed.

On Sunday we went to Yufuin, a spa town with several open air onsen. The oldest is only 200 Y - less than £2 - but eventually Guillaume opted for the slightly more expensive option, which gave more privacy and was still only £3. In the evening we had Japanese beef again but the cuts were marinated in very garlicky sauces which ruined the taste... (and meant that I was very, very hungry this morning).
