Sydney

Dimanche, Steve que nous avons rencontré sur Londres nous emmène aux Montagnes Bleues (Blue Mountains) 1h30 hors de Sydney. Les arbres ont déjà les couleurs d'automne. Nous avons vu 3 saisons en 2 semaines - Printemps au Japon, été à Cairns et automne ici. Espérons que nous n'ayons pas l'hiver en NZ... Les montagnes sont appelées comme ça car l'huile des eucalyptus, qui peuplent les montagnes, est bleue. Nous voyons les 3 sœurs (la formation géologique la plus connue) et nous faisons quelques marches pour voir des cascades. 
Lundi (qui est un jour férié ici: Anzac Day), après une grasse mat (enfin!) nous allons visiter la cathédrale puis le jardin botanique jusqu'au point de Macquarie pour avoir une vue magnifique sur l'opéra. Nous visitons ensuite ledit opéra, la visite est très intéressante et explique comment l'architecte danois a gagné le concours et les différents types de bois utilisés dans les différentes salles pour l'acoustique dépendant de l'utilisation (il y a en fait 4 théâtres, un pour le théatre, un pour les ballets, un pour l'opéra/concert et un pour des parties privées). Nous finissons la journée au cinéma IMAX qui a le plus grand écran au monde! Le film (batman vs superman) était pas top mais l'écran était vraiment impressionnant (on devait tourner la tête pour voir tout)
Mardi nous prenons le bateau à travers la baie pour aller à la plage de Manly. Cela nous permet d'avoir une jolie vue sur l'opéra et toute la baie, nous nous promenons sur la plage avant de prendre les bagages et d'aller à l'aéroport pour s'envoler vers Melbourne.

On Sunday our friend Steve, who we met in London, took us to the Blue Mountains an hour or so outside of Sydney. It was incredible how autumnal the trees were up in the hills - red and gold and leaves on the ground. We've seen three seasons in two weeks: spring in Japan, summer in Brisbane and Cairns and autumn up in the mountains. Let's hope we don't have winter in New Zealand...

The mountains (according to the reliable source of someone I overheard trying to impress his girlfriend) are called blue because the oil in the eucalyptus trees that cover them gives the mountains a blueish haze. We saw the Three Sisters (one of the most famous geological formations in the Blue Mountains) and went for a few walks to various waterfalls. The Gordon Falls viewpoint was particularly spectacular - the mountains stretch off into the distance and never seem to end and the red rocks are impressive too.

On Monday (Anzac Day) we finally had a much needed lie-in before wandering through the botanic gardens first to Macquarie's point, to get a view over the harbour of the Opera House, and then to the Opera House itself. We took a very interesting tour of the Opera which explained how the design was selected (they ran a competition won by a Danish architect), and how each of the six theatres are used and their special properties. The theatre designed for symphonies is covered in a particular type of timber - Australian box brush - which is perfect for orchestral acoustics and the theatre for operatic and choral pieces uses a different one better suited for the human voice.

After taking plenty of photos of Sydney Harbour we walked to Darling Harbour to go to the IMAX with the largest screen in the world. The film was rubbish (thank goodness Henry Cavill was in it) but the screen was definitely big...

For our last day in Sydney we took the ferry to Manly, which is famous for giving brilliant views of the Opera House. We spent a few hours walking on the beach before it was time to head to the airport for our flight to Melbourne.
